Elevating History Education to its Rightful Place in the Schools

I am pleased to include a link to an op-ed that appeared in the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday of this week.  The article was written by Norm Augustine, former CEO of Lockheed Martin.  He writes about the critical importance of history education in our nation’s schools, and he notes NHD as a model.

This is a huge endorsement not only for NHD but also for history education in general.  History education must be elevated to the same level of importance as STEM (science, technology, engineering, math).  As Mr. Augustine points out, studying the past in an engaged fashion will provide young people not only with knowledge of the past and historical perspective (so crucial to good citizenship), but also critical thinking, research and writing skills.

We are grateful that Mr. Augustine, an engineer who cares very much about STEM education, recognizes the value of history teaching and learning.

There is an article in the September 2011 issue of “Perspectives on History” (The magazine of the American Historical Association) by Chris Hale about National History Day and how great a program it is. There’s also a call in the article to be a judge at the national level.
